Food Safety Issues - canned food froze

Expert: Carl Copeland - 1/24/2008

Question
I just discovered a bunch of canned food that froze this week when we dropped to 20 below zero.  None of them are leaking or bulging can I still use them.  If so should I use them right a way.  can I open them and freeze the food.  They are still frozen.

Answer
Cathy,

How are you today? The fluctuation of temperatures especially the freezing and thawing of canned goods can definitely effect the quality of the food. Different foods react different ways to extreme cold. I would more than likely cook these items if possible or take them out of the can frozen and place them in the freezer. Canned meats should never be frozen.
