Food Safety Issues - thawing meat & poultry

Expert: Carl Copeland - 1/30/2008

Question
Is it safe to open the packaging of meat and poultry to let it air while thawing on kitchen counter?

Answer
Donna,

How are you doing?  Meat or poultry should not be defrosted on the counter top. I can remember people saying take out the chicken and leave it out on the counter top and once I get home it should be defrosted.

Leaving frozen food on the counter is a breeding ground for bacteria. Food should be defrosted in the refrigerator or microwave. For more Food Storage info please visit
