Food Safety Issues - lasagna...thawed and later frozen, can it be eaten

Expert: Chris Manley - 10/7/2008

Question
i noticed our freezer was leaking lots of water. someone left the door open.
I stupidly forgot to check the condition of the food and just refroze everything.

Store bought frozen lasagna was there, a large pan of it. I am ready to use it
but fear eating what was frozen, thawed at least partially, and then refroze.

Answer
It's hard to say without knowing how thawed everything became.  If everything thawed completely, to above 41 degrees, and for more than 4 hours it should be thrown out.  If it remained partially frozen, and the time was under 4 hours before the freezer was closed, it is safe to keep.
