Food Safety Issues - mold in baby's sippy cup

Expert: Chris Manley - 12/31/2008

Question
hi there, i have a really embarrassing question. i am a real overconcerned parent. recently i found mold in my duaghter's sippy cup. it was quite a bit of it under the lid where i didn't see it because it was covered by a part of the cup. well she drinks from the cup constantly and i couldn't tell you how long the mold was there for. should i be worried? could she get sick? what should i look out for? like i said, i don't know how long the mold was there and for how long she was drinking out of it like that prior to me noticing. help!

Answer
It is unlikely that the mold will cause your child to become ill.  Many symptoms caused by mold can look like allergic reactions or take the form of a respiratory illness.  Most mold is harmless, the fact that it was under the lid probably means the mold was being ingested rather than inhaled, and is less likely to cause respiratory symptoms.

Clean the cup once a day!
