Food Safety Issues - Prawns

Expert: Carl Copeland - 2/6/2008

Question
I defrosted prawns overnight at room temperture and put them back in the fridge when they had defrosted when I came in from work.  Are they ok to eat tomorrow in a salad for lunch.
thank you

Answer
Fiona,

How are you doing? Hopefully, you only took out a few prawns for your salad. You never want to defrost anything at room temperature particulary seafood. Fish is very acceptable to bacteria growth. I would consider this a lesson learned and discard the prawn and defrost them in the refrigerater or by soaking in water.

Take Care,
Carl
