Food Safety Issues - Freezing live fish

Expert: Chris Manley - 3/28/2008

Question
I recently froze live catfish (they were still alivd). Can I still clean and eat them once they are thawed out?

Answer
I don't think you will have an issue cleaning the fish after having been frozen as far as safety, however I would think the taste will be affected by thawing the uncleaned fish. Typically, cleaning the fish immediately after it dies preserves the flavor of the fish.  In your case you will have to allow the fish to thaw until it can be cleaned, potentially causing some flavor issues with the meat.

If the fish is fully cooked after cleaning it should be safe to eat.
