Food Safety Issues - Freezing live fish

Expert: Carl Copeland - 3/28/2008

Question
I recently caught some catfish and didn't know how to clean them. I froze them while they were still alive so when my friend returns from California he can clean them. Will they still be good to eat?

Answer
Paul,
How are you doing?  It's funny that you mentioned catfish, because I would catch them and didn't know how to clean them. But as you know if you catch them somebody will clean them. Don't worry about the uncleaned catfish they will be fine.  Frozen fish can be stored  2-3 months.
