Food Safety Issues - growth? in beef

Expert: Chris Manley - 5/8/2008

Question
Hi - after consuming most of a tri-tip roast my daughter found a large cyst or tumor like growth in her serving...market's corporate HQ said not safe, but we'd already eaten meat.  Now they're ignoring calls after saying they'd have growth (in my freezer) picked up and analyzed.  Does not look like a bruise or a gland.  It's over a month now.  What should I do next?

Answer
If you have not been injured by or become ill from the meat after 1 month there is little chance that you will in the future.  If you are still concerned about how the meat made it to you in that condition, or what the growth might be you may try contacting the USDA.  They are the agency responsible for inspection of the processing facility.  The complaint can be sent through the FSIS system at:

http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Problems_With_Food_Products/

or: 1-888-MPHotline
