Food Safety Issues - Raw chicken

Expert: Carl Copeland - 6/2/2008

Question
I left out chicken breast to unthaw before work and forgot to put them back in the frig.  I came how after a full day of work and realized they were still out.  Is this chicken safe to eat if it is cooked thoroughly?

Answer
Kim,
How are you doing? Chicken should not be thawed at room temperature because it is acceptable to bacteria. Before I became aware I thought this was the only way to defrost chicken. Cooking it thoroughly will not breakdown any bacteria growth. I would cook it immediately and eat it.
