Food Safety Issues - refrigerated fruit left out all night

Expert: Chris Manley - 6/30/2008

Question
We bought fruit that was refrigerated in the store, then left it out all night. It is Delmonte's fruit naturals--red & yellow papaya and pineapple chunks. Is it safe to eat? We put in the refrig the next morning. Thank you for your expertise and time.

Answer
Most fruit is ok to leave at room temperature.  The fruit will tend to spoil and mold more quickly, but pathogen growth (bacteria that make you sick) is rare in fruit.

Follow the manufacturers labeling instructions when in doubt, if the labeling indicates to "Keep Refrigerated" you should throw it out.  If it does not contain this labeling or "Keep Refrigerated After Opening" it can be used.
