Food Safety Issues - Pizza Left Out 24 Hours

Expert: Chris Manley - 7/5/2008

Question
My boyfriend likes to eat pizza after it has been siting out for 24 hours. Is this safe, my common sense tells me not to eat in such a condition?

Answer
No it's not safe.  Pizza, and any other potentially hazardous food should be held at below 41 degrees or above 140 degrees.  Food should be discarded if left between these temperatures for more than 4 hours.  It may not be the cause of a foodborne illness every time, but it is unsafe, and could make you very sick.
