Food Safety Issues - expiration date

Expert: Chris Manley - 7/16/2008

Question
How many days past a sell by date would you consider it to no longer be safe to cook meat. Pork tenderloin specifically and other meat ingeneral? Thank you
Beth

Answer
I would consider raw meat as having a very long shelf life, particularly if frozen, but in cases where the meat will be used and cooked completely, I would not hesitate to use it even if held a refrigerator for extended periods of time.

At a certain point spoilage will cause things to taste bad, but cooking completely will make it safe.
