Food Safety Issues - meatloaf left out

Expert: Carl Copeland - 9/19/2008

Question
We made meatloaf last night and forgot to put the leftover in the refrigerator. If we fully reheat it, is it safe to eat?

Thank you

Answer
How are you doing today? First let me apologize for my delay in response. No food should be left out for more than two hours after being cooked.

The temperature of the room has a lot to do with it also ie. was the room 38 degrees Fahrenheit? Reheating food to a certain temperature will not reduce the bacteria that has already grown on the food.

I have made this mistake a number of times however, I am in no position to tell you what to throw away unless I am absolutely positive that it will harm you. This is a decision you will have to make.
