Food Safety Issues - shelf life after expiration

Expert: Carl Copeland - 9/19/2008

Question
I have a jar of Heinz Chili Sauce. It is unopened. The date on the top is 5/2007.  Can I still use it?

Answer
How are you Sarah? First I would like to apologize for the delay in my response.  The expiration date is there for a reason. I would not say that the sauce in inedible but the expiration date reflects the quality of the product as far as freshness and safety is concerned.

Remember that manufacturers put this date on products to insure that they are safe and the customer will be satisfied. As far as a 05/07 expiration date I would personally not eat it.
