Food Safety Issues - Spoiled cooked chicken

Expert: Carl Copeland - 1/19/2009

Question
I boiled chicken breast and turned it off at 8 pm.  I went next door.  I forgot to put it in the refrigerator until the next morning.  Is it bad?  It smells okay.  Can I reboil it or anything to make sure it is good?

Answer
Carolann,
How are you doing?  Reboiling the chicken is not a solution to food that is left out.  If the chicken was raw I would tell you to definitely throw it away. However, it was cooked and although it does not fall within the normal guidelines for refrigerating your food after cooking it(within 2 hours), I would not consider it spoiled but this is a decision you will have to make.
