Food Safety Issues - moldy donuts

Expert: Chris Manley - 1/6/2009

Question
I masticated and probably ingested mold from a packaged chocolate-covered donut from a vending machine. I am extremely nauseous and a bit light-headed after throwing up everything I had eaten today. I have a slight ring in my ears and occasional dry heaving spells. And still the taste lingers in my mouth . . . what do you recommend? Can mold be bad that bad for you or is it all in my head?

Answer
If you continue to have symptoms you should see a doctor.

Typically, molds are not harmful if eaten, the acid in your stomach makes it difficult for them to survive.  Your symptoms may be indicating the food was contaminated in some way, however most cases of foodborne illness happen 12-36 hours after ingesting the contaminated food.
