Food Safety Issues - Health dept. inspections for home and commercial rental
Expert: Carol Schlitt - 10/31/2009
Question Hi,
I live in Massachusetts and I am starting a cookie business. I have an order well before i am ready but I would like to fulfill it. I know I can get a residential kitchen inspection but I wondered if I do my cooking in a commercial kitchen I rent, will I need to have any kind of inspection from the health dept. or am I good if they have had an inspection in the past?
You help is appreciated.
Thank you
Answer Hi LL,
If you are renting a certified kitchen, then the health department has it on their regular list of operations to inspect. It is not up to you to request an inspection, however, it would courteous of you to notify the local health department that you are renting the kitchen.
Normally, kitchens are inspected at least once a year, more if they are preparing more hazardous foods such as raw meat, seafood, etc.
I would ask the owner of the kitchen for a copy of their last inspection to see what areas they were marked down, (if any). This will give you an idea of the overall safety. In may counties, health inspection reports are online for you to view.
For a summary of health department requirements with links to the state health code in Massachusetts, please see: http://fmi.org/docs/supersafemark/massachusetts.pdf
Good luck with your new business.
Carol
