Food Safety Issues - Week old tuna sandwich

Expert: Chris Manley - 2/3/2009

Question
My 14 year old daughter made a (canned) tuna sandwich a week ago today
but didn't eat it until today. She's starting to feel nauseated and her upper
chest is tight. What should I do? Do I let her get it out or go to the dr/er?

There wasn't anything else on the sandwich.

Thank you,
Jess

Answer
It's very difficult to tell if her illness was caused by the sandwich or not.  Symptoms typically take at least 12 hours after eating to develop, though some can occur sooner. If she continues to have symptoms see a doctor, 7 days is at the upper end of storage time for a ready to eat item like a tuna sandwich, but should still be safe if it was refrigerated at less than 40 degrees for the week.
