Food Safety Issues - water

Expert: Chris Manley - 2/2/2009

Question
Is there a difference between bottled water and tap water? Is it healthier to drink bottled water or tap water? If I want to check my tap water, what should I check it for and how should I check it? Thank you, Lisa

Answer
The answer depends largely on which bottled water and which tap water supply you are referring to.  In general, there is no health benefit to bottled water over tap water, both must meet certain standards that ensure safety.  Some studies even suggest tap water is put through more rigorous testing, and is a safer product than bottled water.

If the tap water where you live tastes bad or is otherwise unappealing, bottled water is a good alternative.

You can obtain a full analysis of your tap water from the city or town you live in, you just need to ask for it.  Some people are sensitive to mineral content, color, odor and taste in their tap water, though these things typically have no affect on the safety of the water.
