Food Safety Issues - freezing and refreezing meat

Expert: Carl Copeland - 5/5/2009

Question
Hello,
I have always been told you can re-freeze meat if it's been completely defrosted, or thawed. Is this true? My freezer went out, and all my meat defrosted. it was still cold, however completly defrosted. I didn't have time to cook it all up, so i threw it out. Afterwards a friend told me i could've safely re-froze the meat. I'm just wondering for future references.
Thank you in advance,
Barbara

Answer
Barbara,

How are you doing?  I can understand your reasoning with throwing out the meat not being sure if it was safe to eat. It is not recommended to re-freeze meats but a lot of it has to do with bacteria growth and the nutrients and quality lost when re-freezing. I have refrozen meats but these items were defrosted in the refrigerator.

If you were unsure as to when your freezer went out I would have thrown the meat out also.
