Question
I just opened a can of Tyson canned chicken to make chicken salad sandwiches for my sons. Upon opening it I noticed what kinda looked like black ink mixed w/ that nasty slime stuff on the outer edge of the lid. I always rinse and/or wipe away as much of the slimy stuff as possible but I don't know what that black stuff is. My can opener is a piece of junk, barely works so I don't know if it contributed to this or what. There wasn't any on the chicken itself and the exp date isn't til 2015. I just don't wanna serve this to my kids if it's sketchy.

Don't worry about the black ink. Likely the grading stamp put on chickens to indicate they were inspected. The stamp is harmless vegetable ink, and didn't wash off before canning. No problem at all. The nasty slime stuff is actually fat that tends to gel during canning. Again, harmless. Tarah you are a good mom and your sons are so lucky to have you watching out for them.
