Food Safety Issues - Carrots

Expert: Carl Copeland - 11/16/2007

Question
We have those single serving bags of carrots with a 'best if used by date' of 10/16/07. They looked, smelled and tasted fine to me...are they still okay to eat? Thanks.

Answer
Anna,
The use by date is set by producers of merchandise along with government agencies.  If there were no use by dates grocery stores they would keep them forever. As long as the carrots were not mushy or dry and flexible they should be alright.  For more vegetable storage and guideline information go to

Take Care,
Carl
