Food Safety Issues - Food storage

Expert: Carol Schlitt - 9/8/2007

Question
Is it safe to leave leftovers in the can they came in to store
in the refrigerator. Like if you didn't use the whole can of something and wanted to save it for another use later?

Answer
Hi Snra,

While it is not recommended to store canned foods in the can in the refrigerator, it is not unsafe. Some foods can react with the metal of the can after opening (tomatoes and other acidic foods) so the recommendation is to place leftovers in a clean non-reactive container with a tight fitting lid for msximum quality and safety.
