Food Safety Issues - Ground beef

Expert: Carol Schlitt - 9/24/2007

Question
What should the shelf life of the raw ground beef used to make beef patties be,and the shelf life of the patties?

Answer
Hi Mario,

Fresh ground beef - whether bulk or in patties -- should be cooked within 2-3 days of purchase/thawing.  If you can not do so within that time frame, the ground beef should be frozen -- either bulk or in patties.

Cooked ground beef patties should be refrigerated and used within 4-5 days.  Again, if you can not do so within this time frame, freeze them for future use.

Carol
