Food Safety Issues - Milk expiry

Expert: Carol Schlitt - 3/21/2007

Question
Hi,

I have a question on UHT-treated milk (the ones on store shelves without needing refrigeration).

Would it be safe to purchase them if the expiry date is near, say, a few months away? Let's assume that the carton/container seal is airtight and not damaged in any way since leaving the factory.

thanks,
shearer

Answer
Hi Shearer,

Yes, it is safe to purchase the milk -- just be sure to use by the expiration date.

Once you open the milk it must be refrigerated immediately and treated like fresh milk -- in other words used within 5-7 days.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.
