Food Safety Issues - Pork in freezer

Expert: Carol Schlitt - 10/25/2006

Question
How long can pork remain in a freezer?

Answer
Hi Anthony,

Technically -- forever!!!

Now for quality, it's best to use pork within 1 year -- less for ham which tends to lose quality in the freezer. The recommendations for freezer storage are based on quality, not safety. As long as food remains frozen it is safe to eat.  Unlike women, frozen foods do not get better with age!

For a good resource on freezer storage, check out this website:  http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fttstore.html

Hope this has helped.  Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Carol
