Question Raw, unpeeled vegetables (like zucchini and cucumbers) are my favorite things to eat, but I'm nervous about germs and pesticides. Is there any safe way to wash them so I can eat the skin without worrying or cooking them? I've been washing them with antibacterial hand soap, which I'm sure is insufficient. Thank you.
Answer Hi Lisa,
Actually, washing with antibacterial hand soap is not recommended for vegetables and fruits as this is not a food safe product (ie -- not intended for human digestion). We recommend washing fruits and vegetables with water and a vegetable brush -- that's all. If you wish to use a purchased vegetable wash you may -- but it has not been found to be more effective than plain old water.
I know you'd think something stronger would be recommended -- but water and a brush is all!
I hope this answers your question. If you should have additional questions, please let me know.
