Food Safety Issues - Safety of silicone gasket?

Expert: Carol Schlitt - 5/8/2006

Question
Hello,

I own a cermaic canister that closes shut with a metal clamp...  When tightly closed the canister is ensured air tight via the silicone gasket...

It is said the gasket is made out of silicone, I will have to call the manufacturer to be sure...

I use this canister to store tea.  My concern is whether there could be toxic gases or what have you bleeding or out gasing out of the gasket becuase it is under a lot of pressure while being closed.

Do you see this sort of thing as a health concern?

Thank you very much,

Regards,

Ryan

Answer
Hi Ryan,

I'm not aware of any health concerns associated with this type of gasket closure.

The FDA has approved a food-grade silicone gasket so I'm thinking your canister may have this type, which is designed to withstand heat from -60 to +220C. I can not find any reference to pressure but I don't think you should be concerned about this gasket leaking toxic gas.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Carol C. Schlitt
