Question Can i sell homemade pasta (dried) at flea markets, bazaars, with just a homemade label on the package in NJ? if i do good do i have to purchase a upc to sell online, thanks in advance.
Answer Hi Lori,
While I do not live in NJ, most states require that food items made for sale must be produced in an inspected kitchen that meets basic requirements established by the state. So, before you begin making your product, I suggest you contact your local health department (environmental services division) and ask for requirements for producing and selling food items in your jurisdiction.
As far as labeling, again most states will allow small manufacturers to use their own labels which state the name of the product, ingredient listing, weight of the product and name/address/phone number of the manufacturer. This can be your own homemade label.
I'm not aware that a UPC code is necessary to sell online, however your state dept of AG may have jurisdiction on products sold across state lines so I'd also contact them.
Your Rutger's Cooperative Extension Service is also a place I'd contact for answers to your questions. To find your local office see this website: http://www.rcre.rutgers.edu/county/
Good luck with your product and if I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
