Food Safety Issues - Tomato Fly

Expert: Lynn Schottke - 9/6/2007

Question
In the supermarket, flies are always on the tomatoes. This must be full of germs and bacteria. Even though I have been told by a friend not to, I always use antibacterial soap to wash them. I have never gotten ill from it. I love tomatoes and eat them every day, but the thought of the flies makes me sick! Gross!

Answer
Hi Maureen, Flies are gross!!!!!!! I would not use anti-bacterial soap though. Warm water and plain white vinegar will do just fine. They do sell a product that is specially made for cleaning fresh produce, I think it's called true fit, but, if you read the ingredients you can make it yourself. Even, lemon juice will do the trick, It's the acid that does the bacteria killing. Sorry for my delay, we keep having computer problems..Lynn
