Food Safety Issues - Turkey Breast in refridgerator

Expert: Carol Schlitt - 10/7/2007

Question
I purchased a turkey breast, frozen, about 11 days ago. I put it in the refrigerator to defrost and forgot all about it. It has been defrosted for about 7 days. Is it still good to cook or should I toss it?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Linda,

Unfortunately, you need to pitch it.

Defrosted poultry should be cooked within 1-2 days of complete thawing.  Poultry is well known for supporting the growth of bacteria easily and unfortunately, some of the bacteria can produce a toxin that is not deactivated by cooking.

Sorry...wish I had better new for you.

Carol
