Food Safety Issues - baby food

Expert: Carl Copeland - 11/20/2007

Question
My boss has a un-opened box of Gerber mixed baby cereal that has a "best by" date for may 2007. Is it safe to feed it to my son? Also, there are some unopened Gerber Graduates pasta dinners that have  a "best by" date for July 2007. Are those safe?

Answer
Jenni,
How are you doing?  The best by date is used to let you know that the freshness and quality of the product are at its best within this time frame. Honestly for you and me we might be able to stretch this timeline. But for your son it is not worth the chance or after thought to serve this food to your son.
