Question
Is it safe to thaw a frozen turkey in a portable cooler----with no ice or water?

Answer
Hi Lori,

If the temperature inside the portable cooler can simulate refrigerator temperature (32-41 degrees) then it would be safe. I don't think this is possible without ice.

My suggestion would be to defrost the turkey in the refrigerator (1 day for every 5 lbs) as it is the simplest and safest method.

For more information on safely defrosting a turkey, please visit the University of Illinois Extension's "All About Turkey" website at:  http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/turkey/index.html

Good luck with your turkey.  Happy Thanksgiving.
