Question
What would happen if someone accidentally consumes a fruit or vegetable with a small (pea-sized) spot of mold on it? is it the end of the world? I heard you could die, but I assumed that you would have to eat a lot of moldy food for that to occur. is that right?

thanks

Answer
Hi Paul,

Most molds if they are going to cause problems cause  allergic reactions and respiratory problems. That's why we recommend not smelling or sniffing obvious mold.

Unfortunately, a few molds, in the right conditions, produce "mycotoxins," poisonous substances that can make people sick. Also, foods that are moldy may also have invisible bacteria growing along with the mold and it is the bacteria -- not the mold, that could make you ill. Mold can cause illness, especially if the person is allergic to molds.

Usually though, the main symptoms from eating moldy food will be nausea or vomiting from the bad taste and smell of the moldy food. Death from eating mold is very, very rare so it possible to die -- but you'll probably win the lottery first!!

Relax -- probably nothing will happen.  Monitor the person that consumed the mold and if any unusual symptoms develop, contact your physician.  Chances are, nothing will happed if the person consuming it is not allergic to mold.
