Question
Hi there!

I live in Lexington, KY.  I would love to start a bakery type business from my home.  I unfortunately, can not find any info about whether this is possible and legal.  I was wondering if you knew what the guidelines and regulations were and what kind of licensing I would need for such an business.  Thanks so much for any help.

Eva

Answer
Hi Eva,

Lexington, KY -- one of my favorite cities!!!

I'd start with my local county health department and ask for the environmental health division. They are the people who inspect restaurants in your area. They should be able to tell you the regulations for starting a home business in your county.

I'm in Illinois and the requirements here for a home-based food business are that you have to have a separate, inspected kitchen from your home kitchen. This kitchen may be in your basement, out-building or you may rent an already inspected kitchen. This kitchen must have a 3 compartment sink, separate hand sink and back-flow devise on your plumbing to prevent sewer water from backing up in your kitchen.

I suggest you also get a hold of the excellent book "From Kitchen to Market: Selling Your Gourmet Food Specialty" by Kenneth F. Hall. Dr. Hall has a wealth of information, contacts and practical advise for starting a food business.

Also, you might want to contact your local Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and ask if they have resources for home-based entrepreneurs. Many Extension Services around the country have entrepreneurial programs to help people grow their business from dream to reality.

Good luck Eva. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
