About Susan Lee Ottevanger, Wellness Coach
Expertise
There is nothing on earth more important than your body, your health. With a little knowledge, there is nothing in life you have more power, more control over. If you are tired of feeling bad, stop eating badly. Most of what we eat most of: only a human mistakes this stuff for food. Distinguish real, satisfying food from the mere flavored packing material that keeps you hungry. If you`ve been on every diet twice and are going crazy, I can give you a path to Peace in the Kitchen.

Experience
In the late '80's my weight up and down reached a crisis. Arthritus in my back made it painfull to move. Balancing blood sugar had me eating more often. Eating more, moving less, miserable. My doctor smiled, said "just move more and eat less". This from a medical professional about to burst his buttons. Not a working plan. I knew I had to write my own, so I started researching what was new to put with what sorta worked for me in the past. Eat protein, eat carbs, just not at the same time. Never go around hungry, listen to your body, it can tell you what it needs.

Food Science - Protein

Expert: Susan Lee Ottevanger, Wellness Coach - 8/27/2009

Question
I would like to get the most out of working out as far as building muscles. I am 28 and male, and have had a little trouble with belly fat. I've been told that building good lean muscle is one of the better ways to lose weight aside from diet. I would like to build more muscles to help burn more, but I don't know how much is enough or too much. Whey and other types of protein come in liquid, powder, bar, and whatever other forms it comes in these days. I'm not sure what to go with although I know I can probably tolerate the flavor of bar protein with chocolate to whey protein powder (which is also kind of inconvenience since I can't mix stuff at the gym within that crucial 30 minutes). What is the way to go as far as protein form, and how much should I use. They come in 20MG, 30MG, and up. Can someone over do it, or does the body pretty much use whatever you put into it? I don't like the idea of my workouts being wasted, and I do feel I push myself reasonable hard even if not as frequently during the week as I should.

Answer
Hi James,

Avoid all that snake oil racket. Protein is made from amino acids, you make your own from dead flesh, and almost everything you eat has some amino acids in it. Your body can only use a small amount, and the excess does not leave quietly - it does kidney damage and more.

Belly fat and other fat is from empty, phoney food, especially refined sugar and refined four.

Best resistance training is once a week, 30 minutes of just wearing out each muscle group; none of this boring reps and rests.

Get on a life plan, not a a short term gimmick that will leave you flabby and frustrated when you get bored and lapse.
