When did NFL change rule on coin flip from 30 minutes before game to on field flip?

I'm sorry, I could not find anything to that could give you an answer, as far as I can remember the coin toss was always right before the game began, and after asking a couple of friends who work at the NFL, they also do not remember the toss happening 30 minutes prior to the game.
