Question In 1970 Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints kicked a 63 yard field goal. In the same game he kicked an 8 yard field goal. Is his 8 yard field goal the record for the 'shortest' field goal in NFL History?
Answer I could not find a record of the shortest field goal in history, but if we take into consideration that the goal posts were on the goal line and realistically you would need a snap of 7 yards, then it's conceivable to think that there was probably a 7 yard field goal at some point in history, but I could not find any record of it. I never heard of Dempsey and the 8 yard field goal, so I'll presume there wwere shorter field goals.
