Your instructions do not make sense to me: remove spindle, then strike axle to loosen lower ball joint, then remove spindle AGAIN??? And how can you hit the axle hard enough to loosen, but not so hard that it is not deformed? What is the trick?
Besides, the main difficulty is to loosen the ball joint by striking the axle, because of the spindle's lower edge being in the way. A On the other hand the spindle can not be removed without either loosening the ball joint from the axle, or pressing the ball joint out of the spindle, which is also impossible, since the C-press can't get in there without taking the spindle out first. So, if you do not have a better explanation how to hit the axle hard enough, the only possibility to loosen the lower joint is to use a pickle fork and a sledgehammer
