Ford Repair - 1993 Festiva Timing Belt

Expert: Dennis W - 9/2/2007

Question
Need to do a timing belt on my 1993 Festiva and havinf issues with the cranl pulley Single belt pully, no accessory belt.  Here is what I have attempted.  Line up all timing makrs and verify bt removing distributo cap.  Remove fan belt, remove 4 bolts holding crank pulley on.  Pulley and a small spacer come off.  Remove 3 bolts holding water pump pulley on, remove pulley.  Remove timing covers.  Now I have full access to timing belt.  Next I losten tensioner and pull timing belt from Cam Pulley.  I can not get the timing belt off the crank.  There is the crank riming gear the center crank bolt and the rear spacer that the crank pulley bolts through .  This back spacer is in the way.  How do I remove it??  is it suposed to slide off or do I need to remove the center crank bolt and take it and the lower wiming gear off?  The Ford servic manual shows it coming off and the crank bolt not being removed.  Car is a 1993 with 60000 miles so this is possibly the 1st timing belt, could the
spacer be rusted on?  The cars with an accessory pulley show 2 screws, this is only a 1 pulley system and there are not any screws.  Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Have to admit I have not had the pleasure of this particualr operation, yet. Not may Festivas on the road. The tech data I have says nothing about removing the crank pulley. It does include removing the tensioner, I can only assume because otherwise the is not enough belt slack to remove it. This should be a really simple job, considering the simplicity of the engine. If I can find any other info I will relay it to you here.
