Ford Repair - fueling an 04 escape

Expert: James - 11/6/2009

Question
In the past 3-4 weeks I have noticed that every time I try to put fuel in my escape the station  pump repeatedly kicks off like the tank is full. This happens every 3-5 seconds.  It takes about 5-10 minutes to fill up the tank.  Thanks Jack

Answer
This can be explained in several reasons. I trust that you have tried different filling stations? The neck filler is most likely the culprit, being unusual in a late model. It is more common in early model trucks. However, vandalism could be explained. A vandal could have inserted a feminine product into the filler, causing it to expand when the gasoline hits it. Most vandals use it to disable the vehicle, but on your truck, it cannot get all the way into the tank, preventing it from disabling the vehicle. I had to look it up on imdb.com, but Kurt Russell did a movie called "Break Down" where this exact thing was done to his vehicle. If the check engine light isnot on, you can probably rule out a sensor. I would remove the neck filler and examine it. If replacement is needed, you will need to get it from the dealership.
