Ford Repair - ford taurus power steering unit

Expert: Jeff Wade - 3/5/2009

Question
Hi, my 99 ford taurus suddenly started leaking fluid (a lot) out of the steering unit down under the car. If I take it out can I get the seals and stuff to rebuild it or will I just have to get another "unit".  (the thing that works the steering on the wheels.)

Answer
Hi William,
The steering gear can be resealed, but it takes alot of special tools to do it. We don't even do it anymore. We get remanufactured gears. They are very hard to replace unless you have a car lift to work on. The best thing to do is take it to your favorite mechanic or your FORD dealer where the work is guaranteed. This job takes alot of special tools to do!!. GOOD LUCK.

Jeff
