QUESTION: Hi I have a 1998 Mercury mystique with 88000 miles on it. It has a check engine light on. I checked the codes and it has the code p402, i think it was EGR.  Do you have any ideas?

ANSWER: hey there. what engine does this mystique have, the 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder?

ok then check to see if there is something called a DPFE sensor on your car. this is a very typical fault with egr systems on for cars and trucks. it is a sensor with two rubber lines going to it of the egr tube.  change that clear the codes and you should be good, if it isfor some reason not equiped let me know and i will ook into it further. good luck
