Ford Repair - Fuel Filter change on 1993 Ford Explorer

Expert: Dave - 8/24/2004

Question
Where can I find the instructions (1) on the Internet or (2) in books for this replacement? Does it require special tools?  How do you relieve the pressure from the fuel tank? The car bucks and spits until warmed up and I feel it is the fuel injectors which need cleaning but want to try something cheaper first. Don't know when the fuel filter was last changed or if ever. Thank you.

Answer
The fuel filter is mounted in a bracket to the frame under the rear of the vehicle.  I believe it only has small plastic clips holding the lines on.  You can relieve the pressure at the fuel rail service port.  It wouldn't hurt to change the filter and clean the injectors, but if either were that clogged, it would cause problems at all temperatures.

Hope this helps,
Dave
