Ford Repair - Steering box

Expert: Erik H. - 5/2/2005

Question
The bottom seal in the steering box leaks...Do I replace it from the bottom or disassemble and replace from top can find no refrence in the 86 Chilton's manual...It is a 1986 ford 150 .
  thank you

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
It is removed from the bottom. Remove the pitman arm. Then the dust shield. Then remove the C clip. Then start the vehicle and place a pan under the steering box and crank the steeting wheel to one side. The pressure in the box will force the fluid and seal out. Re center the wheel and install the seal, clip and additional dust shield.
Hope this helps,
Erik
