Question Hi Ed,
We have a house in So. CA (built '87.) We bought in 2002. Last week we had warm floors that turned out to be from a slab leak in the kitchen area. In the past 4 days many big cracks are appearing on the walls and floor of the house. The insurance's geologist determined that the cracks are not related to the water leak and consequently denied coverage.
What do you suggest we do? It is very strange that both problems happened so close to each other. I assume the insurance co would do anything to avoid coverage. Do you have any suggestions on how to repair and also to fight against insurance company?
Thanks in advance,
Karen
Answer Hello Karen
Trying to get insurance companies to help with foundation problems is very difficult.
You should contact structural experts in southern California, and have a thorough examination of the cracking and relative water intrusion. This inspection should be performed by a licensed, reputable, structural engineer. You will receive a written report of the findings and suggested remedies. You should also ask the engineer for a list of recommended contractors that specialize in the types of repairs needed.
If the engineer believes there may be an insurance covered situation, then you will have ammunition to challenge the insurance companies coverage.
I wish you the best!
Respectfully Ed Eckley
