Question Jim
I have a 60 yr old home in the Cleveland area with a full basement. I have foundation drains, a sump pit and pump that has always kept the area dry. Lately I have been getting water under the carpet in a part of the room away from the sump (separated by a wall). We pulled up the carpet and padding %26 dried the area but could not locate the source of the water. It has happened again and now I think water is wicking up through cracks in the slab. Could the foundation drains be plugged or damaged? If plugged how can I navigate the tees to clear it? The sump liner is clay with one hole for the drains - would it make sense to drill some weep holes near the top of the liner to release possible pressure? Hope this is enough info. Thanks
Answer Dennis,
It's almost a promise that the draintile is clogged or damaged. I would suggest that you try this first...
Dig up a corner of the basement, all the way down to the draintile. Have it opened up enough so that you can get a company like Lake County Sewer in there to jet clean the lines. If the lines are broken they can usually locate the section needing attention...rather than digging up the whole perimeter. This will tell you for a relatively small price if the drains can be cleaned only, or if they need repair, or worse case...replacement. Weep holes are worth a try, but not likely to work.
The water table below the floor is now higher than the floor, with nowhere to go!
Regards, jim
