France - language, occupation, "marchand linger"

Expert: Jon Catt - 9/17/2009

Question
Hello Jon,

I'm researching Antoine-Augustin Parmentier whose father was a "marchand linger" as in the sentence below.

"Jean-Baptiste-Augustin, son père, était marchand linger."

I can't find the meaning in the dictionaries, it is in the 18th century and it could be obscure.

Also, some resources I have state Parmentier's birthday as August 12th and others the 17th, I think it is the 12th but I wonder if you could verify that.

Thanks - Kat

Answer
Hello,
you could go for the literal translation Lingerie Merchant or Lingerie Seller. It seems that they sold, made and took care of lingerie. Check out the French site Metiers D'Autrefois. I'm never sure why the Cartesian French have such a problem with dates. I'd go for the 12th as this seems to be the date given on most reliable sites.

                    Yours,

                       Jon
