Question Several years back I found a site (perhaps government or museum) that had available recordings from the early 1900's of French Canadian music for downloading. Many where vocals.
Do you know of such a site? And if so, is it still available?
Thanks,
Owen
Answer Bonjour, Owe,
I'm not sure which site you're thinking of, but here are a couple of sites that I've found that might fit.
The first is from the Bibliotheque et Archives Nationales du Quebec, and has a large collection of recordings.
The second is Notre Memoire en ligne, and has scans of the Chansons Populaires du Canada songbook. It's not an audio, so you need to be able to read the music. But it might help you figure out the lyrics of the songs from the audio site. Just about every French Canadian family I know (including mine!) had a copy of this book tucked away for family gatherings and such.
