French Canadian Culture - Obtaining Diploma to teach

Question
I am trying to become a science teacher her in Quebec.  I am from the United States.  I am finishing my degree in Biology, BA.  I see you attended McGill University for your teaching diploma.  Are you able to teach in the education system?  How do I find out information about getting into that program?  Once obtained can you teach in the province of Quebec?

Answer
Hi, Denise,

My suggestion would be for you to get in touch with an advisor at the McGill Faculty of Education.  When I completed my Quebec teacher training, I was able to do a "fast-track" program, as I already had a B.A. Honours degree. Thus I was able to complete a post-Bacc. degree in Elementary Education in three terms.  A year after starting the program, I was a certified classroom teacher.

Certification in Quebec is a three-step procedure.  First you must complete the required coursework.  In my day, you had to take at least part of those courses in Quebec, nowadays it might be different as an interprovincial agreement exists recognizing professional certication and licencing across provincial lines. Upon completion of your coursework, you are awarded a temporary/probationary certification.  After two years probation, if your performance has been satisfactory, your employer will recommend you for permanent certification.

Hope this helps,
Bonne chance,
Jo-Ann
